Diego stilled his breath, keeping a hawk-eyed sharpness on Salazar, who bent over with laughter—a one-man display of hilarity. The dirty cop straightened, and as he did, he removed the Glock from his shoulder holster underneath his jean jacket.

Rocky swung his arm around from behind his back.

Diego made a snap decision. He had no intention of turning this moment into a standoff, and he swung his hand around with his Glock and fired two rounds. Rocky fired even as he crumpled to the floor.

Around Diego, shouts arose and rounds fired behind him. He leapt over Rocky’s body, bounced off the front porch, and hurdled for his car. He cranked the car engine and began to pull away, slumped behind the opened car door, using it as a shield against potential incoming ordinance.

Then things went silent except for the car engine. Maybe his bangers had gotten the drop on Salazar.

He slammed the car door and eased up to look. The rear window exploded. Diego floored the accelerator and fishtailed down the street until he got control of the car and barreled onto a cross street away from the scene.
